Crude oil, commonly known as petroleum, is a liquid found within the Earth comprised of hydrocarbons, organic compounds and small amounts of metal. While hydrocarbons are usually the primary component of crude oil, their composition can vary from 50%-97% depending on the type of crude oil and how it is extracted. The top five oil-producing nations are responsible for nearly half of the world's production of crude oil, lease condensate, unfinished oils, refined products obtained from the processing of crude Saudi Arabia and Russia also top the list of oil exporting countries, while Russia is not a member of OPEC. Although total U.S. crude oil production generally declined between 1985 and 2008, annual production increased from 2009 through 2015. Crude oil production quantities are estimated by state and summed to the PADD and the U.S. level. State production estimates reported by EIA are normally different from data reported by state agencies. For example, production estimates for Texas reported on table 26 are different from production reported by the Railroad Commission of Texas.
